Civil Design Manager
We are seeking a Roads / Highways Design Manager for a leading Tier 2 contractor, based in Melbourne.

Building Design Manager
Design Manager responsibilities:
Post contract award
Co-ordinate the design development and documentation from Contract award through to design completion. Assist with closing out Authority design related items to ensure commencement on site.
Leadership Development
Perform the role of Project Design leader: Overseeing the progression of design and construction documentation, facilitating the development and mentoring of site coordinators, and reporting back to the Project Manager and Victorian Design Manager.
Provide input for the development, improvement and implementation of design management quality plans, procedures, guidance notes and forms and establish design management best practice.
Detail
- Manage Client and Consultants to achieve agreed outcomes for time, cost and quality;
- Provide advice to the client as to the requirements and their obligations in the development of a building design
- Review design documentation, reports, planning permits conditions, performance brief and other PPR documents to ensure all design risks are adequately addressed
- Manage the design process and the Consultant team, post contract award, to ensure timely delivery of documentation to satisfy project program and quality requirements
- Ensure design information is of the right scope and quality
- Input / Influence / encourage / comment and direct on overall building design keeping into consideration project specifics including
- Project budget and construction costs
- Project brief and architectural intent
- Availability of materials and trades
- Longevity and warranty of products
- Construction sequencing and detailing
- Compliance with PPR
- Coordinate programming, with the Project Manager and Design Manager, on the above relating all design, authority, council and consultancy time including all co-ordination of elements
- Consult with the subcontractor to ensure constructability and tenders meet the contract design requirements.
- Review OH and S implications during the design period to minimise OH and S risk
- Ensure design is builder friendly, avoid poor details simplify with maintaining architectural design intent subject to project brief
- Investigate and research new products and technologies and implement where desirable and feasible
- Review and implementation of ESD initiatives required to achieve project targets and obligations; and Monitor ESD deliverables for incorporation in design outputs and construction obligations, including consideration of green star requirements and ABGR where applicable in commercial construction, while assessing application and costs
- Identify and manage risks related to novation and/or engagement of Consultants; review consultant agreements with Design Manager prior to novation and head contract execution to ensure scope of services are as required and fees adjusted if necessary to suit prior to head contract execution
- Engagement of and coordination with specialist consultants when required
- Work closely with PMs and Site Manager to ensure documentation provided in accordance with required timeframes and level of quality for obtaining building permits, tendering subcontract/supply packages and for construction.
- Liaise with the Project Manager and Contracts Administrator on design opportunities and risks
- Oversee shop drawing coordination with site Coordinators assisting with procurement where required
- Oversee site Coordination team and provide mentoring throughout the design life cycle
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Experience in managing the design of technical projects through to delivery and handover;
- Great communication, and the ability to work with people at all levels, from client to subcontractors;
- Experience working on Health projects (highly regarded).

Project Manager
The Project Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of the construction project in accordance with design, time, cost and quality requirements while also maintaining client relationships and promoting opportunities for future work.
Responsibilities:
Financial
Ensure the targeted project margin is met or exceeded
Each month, ensure the project cash position is cash positive
Review and approve project financial reports ensuring they accurately reflect the projects financial position
Review project costs and take corrective action if significant deviations from budget occur. Report regularly to management on budgets
People
Ensure all project staff are aware of the projects goals and objectives, and the connection of their role to these goals and objectives
Monitor and review the performance of direct reports and provide leadership, mentoring and coaching to the project management team
Drive performance by setting standards, objectives and holding people accountable for meeting them
Ensure that resources are utilised in an effective manner which enable project staff to meet standards and deliver objectives
Develop and retain staff with the view to progress staff through the company
Operations
Ensure the provision of a safe working environment
Plan, develop and implement project goals and objectives
Lead all aspects of project delivery to ensure they are on schedule and within quality requirements
In conjunction with the Construction Manager and Estimator determine subcontractor selection
Act as an escalation point to resolve issues referred by Site Manager, Design Manager, Contracts Manager and other project staff
Authorise Site Instructions and Client Advices
Attend, as required, design meetings, site meetings and safety meetings
Liaise with Employee Relations Manager and make decisions to ensure industrial issues are non-disruptive to project outcome
Ensure all project activities comply with relevant legislation (e.g. Workplace relations, environmental legislation, OH&S)
Ensure compliance with Multiplex Management System and Multiplex policies and procedures
Customer
Manage client relations for the project, interpret client requirements and resolve issues
Report on project progress to client and Multiplex Management/Directors
Strengthen existing client relationships to provide opportunity for future work
Knowledge and Experience required:
Knowledge of commercial construction techniques and sequences
Knowledge of contract administration
Experience in leading a team with a sound knowledge of behavioural competencies and leadership styles
Understand the costing system i.e. requirements of PAM, Cheops, forecasting
Experience in managing Industrial Relations matters
Knowledge of Building Code of Australia
Knowledge of OH&S legislation, policies and procedures
Knowledge of market including costs of labour & resources and the product market
